熱紅茶杯盤還有其它功用?

熱茶或咖啡底下的杯盤,你一定不曾懷疑,他就是用來放置上面的茶杯或咖啡杯,以及放置勺子、砂糖、奶精、香料或是餅乾,理所當然,還可以當作共用盤或是承接沿著杯口流下來的液體,保持整潔。

但其實這個杯盤在過去還有其它的用途,在十八世紀時,飲茶長期以來一直與禮儀和溫柔聯繫在一起,客廳是家中所有禮貌社交活動的中心,喝茶的禮貌方式是坐直在高背椅子上,一隻手拿著無把手的瓷碗,小心翼翼地在嘴唇和胸部之間移動,另一隻手拿著杯盤放置在下面。

這些禮儀舉止表現了一個人的財富和社會地位,也展示了一個人的品味和精緻,這可能是許多十八世紀的家庭選擇畫他們在喝茶時的肖像的原因。

杯盤在1700年代開始出現,原本的設計是做為接水容器,減少因為杯碗裡的液體溢出的社交尷尬,但後來並不是每個人都會遵循這繁複的飲茶儀式,有些人選擇直接將茶倒在杯盤裡喝,餐桌禮儀不是優先考量,而是實用與方便。

用碟子喝茶、咖啡

從杯盤裡直接飲用的好處,就是可以快速冷却,避免過久的等待或等待期間的尷尬,如果你是一個工人或忙碌的家庭主婦,可能沒有時間等待茶湯慢慢放涼後再來品味,隨著工業化的加速,工作場所的規範非常嚴格,工薪家庭負擔不起遲到所導致的罰款,通過將熱茶直接倒入杯盤飲用而不是杯子,可以更快地冷卻並節省寶貴的時間,在一般場合中,也可以透過這個方式,從杯盤中飲用到已經冷卻的茶湯,但在茶杯裡的熱茶仍繼續保有溫度,不會涼得過快。

杯盤的邊緣也非常適合放置餅乾,它們吸收了一點茶,潤濕和軟化,可以愉快的邊吃餅乾邊喝茶

Saucers began to appear around 1700 but, with their flat and lipped design, were intended as receptacles for drips, not as a vessel for drinking from. Bowls or cups would have reduced the social embarrassment caused by spilling or slurping.

But not everyone followed the customs and tea drinking rituals of the age. Some chose to ignore them, preferring to drink direct from the saucer. Polite parlour table manners were not the priority. Instead, practicality was the watchword.

Drinking from saucers has many benefits. The leisured wife of the middling sort may have been at pains to show that she could afford the time to let her tea cool in her porcelain cups, while she gossiped with her friends.

But if you were a labourer or a busy housewife, there may not have been time to wait. As industrialisation accelerated, clocks in the workplace and public spaces regulated the working day, and lateness resulted in a fine which working families could ill afford. By pouring tea into a saucer rather than a cup, it cooled more quickly and saved precious time.

Saucers were also preferred by the labouring classes because they were perfect for balancing a biscuit on the corner. Biscuits could go stale overnight, but by putting them on the edge of a saucer, they soak up a little of the tea, then moisten and soften. Then you can eat the biscuit and drink the tea!
